War Memorial
Thank you to Yvonne Airault who went to the Archive section of the mairie to find some information about the Monument aux Morts. She found the minutes of some of the meetings relating to the financing and commissioning of the monument. A full transcription of the minutes is in the French section of the site.
On 12 September 1920 the Municipal Council decided to erect a monument commemorating those who had died in the war. They asked the Préfet of la Dordogne permission to use 3500 francs of that year's budget to that effect and also requested financial help from the Département. A provisional date was mentioned – 15 March 1921.
Obviously that date was provisional as the next minutes are dated 16 November 1924!
An artisan from Saint-Aulaye, Henri Simonnet was chosen to make the monument at a cost of 12500 francs. He was given a six-month period in which to complete the monument.
More to follow, we hope!
NB : You may notice the word "poilu" in the minutes. This word which means "hairy" refers to a WWI soldier but the etymology is unclear!
